Why do we do it? The love we have of telling other people what to do becomes rampant and we seek to domineer each other, even in spiritual terms. We want to be seen to be in control of ourselves and others as it gives us clout and regard. The life of the humble is unseen and unknown in the scramble to be noticed. What stance do I take in the scheme of things? How should my mind process this phenomenon?
We take as our example the mindset of Christ, Son of God and Son of Man. The perfect God and only perfect man. Although He is so high and lifted up for real, and not manufactured as we do it, he does not consider glory something to be grasped at, but humbled himself and became a person of no significance in order to save us. His motivation towards us is love, and He is not willing that any should perish everlastingly. His patience and kindness extend into eternity for all who love Him back and bow themselves to His Lordship and Saviour-hood. His authority comes from Himself and His eternal dignity as the Lord of the Universe. The ruling elite could not understand it and hated Him for it, after all, He was just a scallywag from Nazareth…
Jesus never put anyone down, but spoke honestly and freely the Truth that He is. No one could get the better of Him, though His enemies tried many times to trip Him up in His words, to no avail. Jesus never had to Lord it over anyone, because He is the Lord and never fails or falls. Our living King is ever reigning and has no cause to boost Himself up as it is so obvious who He is by what He does.
We need to consider our own position and the weakness of character that makes us Lord it over others. The desires to dominate is so strong, especially if we feel put upon and disadvantaged. We need to look at our loving Lord Jesus and examine Him and imitate Him in every way. This will change us and make us like Him and strong in the Lord our God.
We have a loving Lord over us, so we do not need to be anxious and cave into lording it over other people. We lift others up and encourage them, and hang around people who will do the same for us. It is called Christian fellowship and the joy of the saints of God.
