When sorrow comes into our life it can cause us so much pain. The Lord is able to release us from it and to keep us safe and secure. We can feel the displeasure and rejection of other people acutely, but we remember the love of Jesus our Saviour and what He has done for us. We find ourselves praying like never before, or perhaps we fall into the silence of unbelief.
We may pray “Lord, Let me hold on to this and remember your love. Help me to feel your love around me and suffer me not to be tempted beyond what I can bear…”
When the pain is too much, we bring it to the Lord and ask Him to pour in the oil and the wine. The outworking of distress in our life can also cause great sorrow and at times our mind will refuse to acknowledge it and we will question if it really happened or not. We can have seasons where we doubt the goodness of God toward us and our sense of the assurance of goodness and the love of God seems to evaporate. Our minds can block out the memories that hurt us deeply as a kind of safety valve to protect our mind and heart from the pain that can ensue from stressful experiences.
Sorrow is debilitating and the cause of it must somehow be dealt with so that we can move on in our life and live without pain. It is not a rambling experience that must go on forever, because that will cause us hurt continually, but at some point we decide enough is enough and we put it out of our psyche and move on.
Even this can be hurtful because we might feel we are being untrue to our memories and the people involved in our sorrow and hurt. We must turn all things over to the Lord and allow His healing power to infiltrate and mend our life so that we can live in peace and joy again. He will build our life and mend our brokenness and later restore all good things to us. He will not permit His children to suffer loss forever, but will intervene on their behalf and cover over hurt and pains.
If we suffer sorrow just now, let us propagate hope in our minds that it is not forever and there is a way of escape. The release will come and we will be able to be glad again…
