“I plead with Euodia and I plead with Syntyche to be of the same mind in the Lord. Yes, and I ask you, my true companion, help these women since they have contended at my side in the cause of the gospel, along with Clement and the rest of my co-workers, whose names are in the book of life.”
Philippians 4:2-3
We are taught that these two Christian women were arguing about something. We are not told what they were discussing, or what the dispute was about, but it wasn’t the price of fish! Perhaps there was a point of theological importance, which had bearing on their service for God. Perhaps one had made a lifestyle choice that the other thought was ungodly. We don’t know.
We are constrained in the Scripture to have the same mind as Christ, which brings unity and humility to all our dealings with each other. Even when we disagree with each other, we process the differences with the meekness of Christ who humbled himself even though He is God the Lord of all.
When we train ourselves to keep our mind in a godly mindset, we have peace with those around us. It is disrupting to our spiritual life to be constantly judging and contesting with each other in the name of correctness and so-called purity of doctrine. We must always bow ourselves to the humility that brings peace and make our fellowships peaceable.
God pleads with us all to keep the peace in our fellowships and concede to each other on all minor points and to bear with each other in the love of Christ for the things we don’t understand. We bear the burdens for other peoples’ sake and maintain our love for each other. We acknowledge that there are always going to be differences, but we put our selfishness and pride aside and accept each other. This is the mind of Christ that we serve each other and maintain the bond of love.
