Surely there is no greater agony than for a child of God is think they do not really belong to Him. There are various states of mind that we can get into that take our thought processes down unhelpful routes and ending in the gloomy thought that we are not really the Lords. Our minds can rehearses our failures and sins and come to the faulty conclusion that we do not really belong to the Lord and will be ultimately lost forever.
This is the product of the depressive mindset and is the end conclusion that ultimately drags us down into illness and not being able to function. It can take over our thoughts and distract us from the necessities of looking after ourselves and providing for our own needs and the needs of others. It is wholly destructive. We can imagine and search constantly to see if we have committed the “unpardonable sin” which causes so must anguish. No one can help this state of mind and we must find ways to stave off the attacks.
If you were not a child of God and had committed the unpardonable sin, you would not care about it. The fact that it disturbs you so, is the comfort. It is a strong sign that you love the Lord if you are worries about offending Him and offending other people. When we suffer in this way, the remedy is really at our fingertips. It is to be found in the precious promises of the Word of God. Sometimes we get so far down the path of depression that we cannot even read the Word, but we can remember the promises as they are fixed in our minds and God will bring it to our remembrance to help us. He asks only that we trust in Him and rely on Him and not on the fripperies of life. Surely there is no greater promise than “I will never leave you or forsake you.” We must cling to the Word of the ever living God and not doubt His Word.
As we get stronger in trusting Him, let us look intently into the precious Book of the Bible and bolster our faith with what we find there. Troubles are sent to make us strong and we build up our psyche so that when doubts arise, we are not floored by them. We put away all doubt and trust in the mighty God who keeps us daily and supplies all our need. it does not mean we will not have difficult days, but we have the comfort at hand to help us.
Pray when you can and ask the Lord to make His way plain to you. Do not allow the doubts to stick to your psyche, but earnestly seek to lay hold on the promises of God. Doubt does not need to define us as we deliberately walk away from its clutches. It is an untrue mindset and we reject it and embrace the ways of the Lord. We fight on in the daily strength that we have been given and do not give the enemy room for manoeuvre.
We all fail and some of us fail miserably! But God is faithful and will not allow us to finally perish. We may have pain and even some days can be agony, but God will pour in the oil and the wine and give us relief. He will not let us depend on the things of this life but give us a strong and vibrant faith that will benefit ourselves and others too. Forgiveness is another key. God has already forgiven His people and we enter into the reality of that each day as we examine ourselves and confess our sin. God is even near and is our portion every day.
Let us enter into the reality of forgiveness and peace and lay hold of our assurance in Christ. “I will never leave you.” This is the key that will unlock the door for the suffering saint.
