We all need some kind of rock in our life to hold to in times of trouble. This is primarily in our mind and psyche and is what makes us secure and confident people. Our sense of security can be undermined by thoughts and feelings and we find ourselves cast adrift in a sea of pain and panic. It can build up over time or can descend on us in a crash. It takes away our confidence in living and we become increasingly undermined in our ability to do things. We even feel uneasy about being in our home and sleep eludes us. We cannot go for long without our rest and sleep and this is difficult to conquer.
In all things we must know, even if we don’t feel it, that God is in control. His loving purposes will work out for us but we must know that sometimes the pathway is rough and wearisome and we enter a time of suffering. God is strengthening our faith and causing us to trust in His deep and precious promises. We find our way through the trouble as we trust in Him. If we don’t feel we are trusting, still we do not fear, for His powerful arms will bear us up.
“The eternal God is your dwelling place. Underneath are the everlasting arms…”
Deuteronomy 33:27
Security is to be found in the Word of the Living God and not in our own efforts. It does not depend on our state of mind or our emotional stability but on the righteous judgment that upholds the throne of God.
We can lapse into states of anxiety but as we step out in faith in God, He orders all our steps and makes our way firm.
“The God who arms me with strength, and makes my way perfect? He makes my feet like deer’s feet, and sets me on my high places.”
Psalm 18:32-33
There are times we can think that we are going under for the last time. We can think that we will never escape the clutches of anxiety and depression, but we turn our eyes deliberately on our Lord and not on the storm around us. He will bring us out as we step up for Him and trust Him. His power is real and His patience will never run out.
“The Lord is not slow concerning his promise, as some count slowness; but he is patient with us, not wishing that anyone should perish, but that all should come to repentance.”
2 Peter 3:9
The purpose of all our experience is to bring us close to our Saviour and become strong women and men for God. Our state of mind is hidden in Him and we keep our thoughts centred on Christ. This is the path to life and peace. As we face the tasks of each day we have confidence in His keeping power. Confidence grows as we face each difficulty knowing this great truth, “I will never leave you or forsake you…” let us hold to our Lord and see His mighty power displayed each day.
