There seems to be a desire in some Christians to speak in tongues. These tongues are not the tongues spoken about in Scripture which are recognisable languages that people in our world speak. On the day of Pentecost the disciples received a supernatural gift of being able to preach the gospel to foreign visitors to the city of Jerusalem in words the people could understand. The disciples did not have to learn the languages but received a supernatural work of the Holy Spirit.
Today people are searching for experiences to make themselves feel and look more godly. They are trying to speak in random sounds and to bypass the mind and are speaking sounds that don’t make sense to the human mind. This is very dangerous. Satan has all sorts of lying wonders in his armaments against us as human beings, who he hates, and desires to lead astray. To be trying to make sounds that you think is some sort of spiritual language is folly. It is a deception and a falling away from the desire for the Holy Word of God.
Why are we looking for experiences? Why are we not more eager to deepen our spiritual life through the reading and study of the Word of God and not our own ideas about godliness? God has provided and revealed Himself in His Word and it is inerrant and eternal and will never pass away. Why are we so slow to put in the effort to study it and dig into the Scriptures? We are chasing after something that is at best fleshly and at worst demonic.
We should not be seeking to bypass our own understanding and have experiences that we don’t really understand. We are to seek the mind of Christ and not fleshly experiences.
The tongues of the New Testament era were actual languages and with the gift of this facility there were also gifts of interpretation. Christians did not just exercise this gift without the logical and rational interpretation of the languages spoken. It was not a case of trying to work up “angel language” to get some sort of experience and feeling towards God. This is not the way God works. God does not bypass the mind, which He has given us as a safety facility against lying and delusions.
We are to conform our life, our thinking and doing, to ways that we can understand more about our Lord and God and not chasing foolish behaviour that undermines our rational faculties. God has given us our mind and it is our most treasured possession. We do not give it up in the search for a higher expression of experiences that we think are bring in us closer to God. Satan has many lying wonders that he will inflict upon the minds of people at the end times and lead them away from God through delusions and lying miracles. We must be on our guard, beloved, for we are not unaware of his schemes. Let us earnestly study the sincere milk of the Word of God that we might grow up in Christ and have a true understanding of the things of God and not fleshly and dangerous practices. Let us know our God as He reveals Himself in the unchanging and settled Scriptures of the Old and New Testaments and not in our own subjective experiences.
