When we suffer either in the mind or the body, we can resort to world orientated thought processes and philosophies. We think that psychology has the answers, and some psychology is good but some is unhelpful. We can turn to false comforts in our time of need and create problems for ourselves. We can easily fall into sinful lifestyles because it seems to help us or comfort us. Many fall into traps which close over them and ruin their life. Some traps are very hard to get out of and only the hand of God can do it.
Mind illness and sinful living can get muddled. Mind illness is very painful and when we first experience it, it is a real burden. Depression is so hard to shake off and we can overcompensate for our pains and look to unhelpful remedies and sinful situations. We can find ourselves being sucked into godless lifestyles and therefore moving away for obedience to the Lord. The comfort seems to help and we are made dependant on that comfort rather than on Christ. Satan is always there to blame, whisper wrong ideas and lead us astray. Our sinful self justifies our choices and we find ourselves trapped by sin.
It is good to speak with a fellow sufferer and gain some insight into the problem we have created. We need a fresh view of our Saviour and a dependence on Him to release us again from the chains. We must get on our knees and repent of sin and build our psyche on the Word of God which is our true comfort. All other comfort will lead us into the slavery of sin again.
This world and your own mind will offer you many suggestions and temptations of ways to cope with illness, but we must resist them no matter how plausible they might seem. The power of the enemy is great and if we are not strong in Christ we will succumb to the temptations. This may seem to be a remedy for the sorrow, but we are being taken of a ride. There is no future in sinning and God will not allow it to run on. If we belong to God, He will come after us and deal with us, whatever way it takes to get us back on track. For the unbeliever it will mean more heartache and further walking away from the Lord. Sin takes us prisoner and without a divine intervention we cannot get out of it. The Lord is merciful and gracious and does not treat us as we deserve, but will lead us out into a plain path where we can see our mistakes and sins and repent of them. This is the way to life and peace.
Because you might find something that gives you respite from the sorrow does not mean it is a good remedy. The good remedy never goes against the law of God nor make you walk in disobedience to Him. Please beware of the schemes of the evil one for He often appears like a helper, like an angel of light. His ways are subtle and perverse and he can trap us easily. Cling to the Word of God and you will remain safe. Fortify your mind and soul with good things. Find reliable preachers to feed your soul and read and meditate on the Scriptures at all times. Prayer does change things, especially praying for others. Prayer lifts our mind and heart to God and will really strengthen and help the struggling mind. We reject all the selfish carping of our human psyche and walk a straight path to peace with God.
If we abide in Christ we will find the victory over sin and have the peace of God in our life no matter what our circumstances are. God will over rule for us and send His comfort into our hurting soul and pour in His delightful oil and wine. This is the only way to satisfaction and fulfilment. These elusive states of being are only to be found in God and we should pursue Him until the light shines through. May you find the ultimate victory that was purchased for us on the cross at Calvary and be an overcomer in the power of God…
