This phenomenon is key to our good mind health. If you are not humbling yourself before your maker every day, you will be out of sorts. Your mind will go to places you should not go and you will have no control over your thoughts. The truth is we need the Lord every day to guide us and guard us from all evil. Evil is everywhere and it is too easy to be taken in by it and find ourselves thinking unworthy things. Our culture today does not recognise repentance, since sin has been dismissed and everyone lives their own “truth.” We need the Truth of God even more now than ever and people need to have sinfulness spelled out to them if they are to face up to their moral failure. We do not like this theme in these days, but unless we recognise our need, there is no repentance or faith and therefore no salvation.
God ensures we are clear about our position before Him and it is not what we think. God is not pleased with human life and the sin that seems to dog our footsteps. He requires holiness and we have all failed this crucial test. We all go wrong and most of the time don’t notice it or gloss over it and ignore the work of our conscience before God. God is holy and every sin is an affront to His character and must be paid for. We need to acknowledge our guilt if we are to get our life right with God.
We can only do this through Christ. His death is the only sufficient payment for our sin. Only Christ the perfect sacrifice could pay an eternity of suffering which our sin deserves. This is why He is the only Saviour and the one we must come to for forgiveness and salvation.
This is why repentance is key to the health of our psyche, for it deals with our deepest need, that is, to know God and walk through life with Him. Carrying on in our own way will only lead us to destitution and despair in the end. We must ask God to help us be humble enough to bow our knees to Him and acquiesce to His ways. This is the difficult part for us, for we are so proud in our conceits and do not accept God for who He is. We take umbrage at the almighty and disapprove of His ways. We set ourselves above the ruling of our maker and try to run away or explain Him away. This is the folly of the human mindset and we need a work of God to get us out of it.
We really need to fall on our knees and seek His forgiveness, and often we need to experience tragedy or sorrow to do this, such is the hardness of our heart. But God is full of tender mercies and will come to us and save us if we will humble ourselves under His mighty hand. Let us not entertain folly and our own version of thinking, but turn to God as He is revealed in Scripture. He will totally pardon all those who come to Him in repentance and faith and save us from the consequences of our rebellion. His love is boundless to those who come to Him in repentance and faith and will give their eternal destiny into His loving will.
Let us trust in the only Saviour of our soul and find rest and peace with our Heavenly Father who will care for us and bring us safely through all of life’s trials and bring us to our eternal life in heaven with Him forever. All our sin will be gone and we will experience eternal life and everlasting glory.
