The human heart is neither contrite nor stable. It is not our natural state of being but we wander and fall in all kinds of thoughts, feelings and behaviours. Our heart and mind – our psyche- is a wandering thing that find no real rest in anything. This is why we constantly search for novelty and the curse of covetousness dogs our every day. The changing scene of the media feeds our lack of concentration and we cease from being able to focus for very long. The Word of God seems too difficult so we do not learn as we should, nor seek the Lord for ourselves.
It is a big modern day problem and we must step away from it for our minds sake. The stable heart needs a stable mind to anchor thoughts and our own ideas. We need to feed our heart through our mind and fill our thought life with healthy ideas. We do not live under the direction of our own will but walk in the philosophies of this present world system, becoming slaves to the thought processes expressed in the media. We might think that we are free but we are under the slavery of the thoughts and ideas that come to us from the things that we expose ourselves to. It is dangerous to meddle in sin, for it takes us from the purity of godly living and holds us in penury of soul. Our soul does not know God nor love His ways until the Spirit of God breaks us down and shows us our rampant rebellion and sinfulness. We do not love God or want Him until we are shown our great need and the condemnation that we live under when we live away from God. We have great needs in reality but often do not acknowledge them and so we tend to wander through life and just live for the moment.
Understanding our thoughts and mindset is key to directing our actions and the way our mind works. If we will guard our heart and mind we will have good health and live productive lives for God. This is not the way of this world which we need to side-step and deliberately walk away from. We teach ourselves to live in the Word of God and make it our business to obey it daily and always. This is a challenge for us as we naturally do not want to do this. We need the presence of the Holy Spirit in our life to cause us to want this way and to stick to it.
We wander away so easily and fall into various unhelpful mindsets which make hay of our Christian life. Let us seek the Lord for He tells us that if we seek Him earnestly we will find Him. Friend, do not be deceived but come to your maker who will show you the way to life and peace. Only His way, and in obedience to it, will give us this great peace and keep us spiritually well and temper all our desires.
