The Christian sufferer

It is a very different experience to suffer mind illness when we belong to the family of God. To experience deep depression and other disturbances in the mind is very frightening to the sufferer and to have no loving, powerful God in charge is very debilitating and causes much sorrow. Life is so uncertain and has no security outside God and it is wonderful to know that He upholds us in all our trials and difficulties. I commend His loving ways to you and if you are reading this and do not know Him and have never faced the reality of your sin, I commend that you seek the Lord.

To know there is a loving God who will watch over all your situation is a powerful weapon against depression. Depression steals our security and makes us fearful and doubting. God knows this and reaches out to us in His great love. We can be secure in that love and know that His will for us is steady when all around seems to be at motion. We can know the steady rock of our God who will keep our pathways firm and under His tender care.

Should we fall so low as to think He does not care is very painful, especially if you are a Christian believer. To lose the sense of family belonging to God is an agony that other people cannot alleviate. When we read the Bible in this mindset, it seems to always disturb us and accuse us of all our sin. This is a trick of the depressed mind and we must fight it with our mind. We deliberately turn to the many and mighty promises of God and claim them for ourselves. The mindset does not last, but we hold on to the sure and certain hope of the deliverance of God.

We must gather our faith and certain hope, which is our anchor and not depend on either thought or feeling to guide us. God will guide our footsteps and keep us walking in the heavenly way, for He keeps all His beloved people no matter their state of mind or being. Do not listen to or believe the doubts that the enemy, Satan, lobs into your thought systems, but counteract his claims with the truth of the Word of God. Don’t give in or give up but keep walking with your Lord, no matter what tricks your mind inflicts you with. Keep reading the Psalms and getting all the comfort contained there. Do not allow Satan to fill the garden of your mind with weeds. Jesus said, “Do not be afraid, just believe,” (Mark 5:36) This is the way out of every deep pit and every giddy mood swing.  God will keep you safe no matter where you might find yourself. He is always in control and will never stop loving you, even if all others leave you and neglect you, His love remains supreme.

Let us hold on to our Saviour and not insult Him with unbelief and doubt. He reigns victorious and so also will we, not just in the coming kingdom but in the here and now.
