If you are a sufferer of mind illness and emotional pain you can be blessed with the gift of insight and being awake to understanding the pain you go through. It is a gift given to those who are willing to be honest with themselves and examine the difficulties within the psyche. We suffer many pains and emotional pain is infamously difficult to deal with and escape, yet there are times of peace and we can learn a lot about our mindset in those times. For the Christian we have the comfort and knowledge that comes from the indwelling Spirit of God, which God gives us as our companion and helper. The Scripture says we can ask God for insight (wisdom) and He will give it liberally to the one who asks.
“But if any of you lacks wisdom, let him ask of God, who gives to all liberally and without reproach, and it will be given to him.”
James 1:5
God sets high value on wisdom which He teaches us continually especially through the book of Proverbs.
“To know wisdom and instruction; to discern the words of understanding; to receive instruction in wise dealing, in righteousness, justice, and equity; to give prudence to the simple, knowledge and discretion to the young…”
Proverbs 1:2-4
Insight, or wisdom, is more precious than riches for as we follow the way it leads, it will bring us to peace with God. This is the key circumstance of peace that towers above all other peace. How good it is to know we have a good God who is willing to forgive us all our sins and bring us into His family. This is the pathway to true life and peace.
Insight comes when we are honest with ourselves and can find the courage to look within our mind and examine our thought patterns and behaviour. It is a kind of facing up which helps us to find a way out of our fallen mindset. If we look at the traces of our thoughts and attendant behaviour we can find a way out of our dilemmas. It is good to have a firm foundation to stand on and the promises of God in the Scripture provide that platform. As we grasp our failings and remember the promises we can find a way of escape from our pain.
Wisdom comes from God and not from modern day psychology. There may be helpful suggestions from other people, but ultimately it is wise to go to our creator and follow what He says in His word. If we are indulging in wrong thoughts and deeds, we need to repent of that and find the forgiveness that will set us free for the future.
“Stand firm therefore in the liberty by which Christ has made us free, and don’t be entangled again with a yoke of bondage.”
Galatians 5:1
There is something we can do. We can seek the wisdom of the Lord and know freedom and He will freely give us the power to stand firm and not go down the unhelpful mind roads that we travel. We can learn new ways of thinking and doing and thereby live wise lives which glorify God and bring us peace and satisfaction. Wisdom is for the brave, for those who will embrace the ways of God and trust in Him. There really is no other way out of our dilemma. We must face our failures and seek forgiveness and a new way of living if we are to be over-comers.
“Behold, all those who are incensed against you will be disappointed and confounded. Those who strive with you will be like nothing, and shall perish. You will seek them, and won’t find them, even those who contend with you. Those who war against you will be as nothing, as a nonexistent thing. “For I, the Lord your God, will hold your right hand, saying to you, ‘Don’t be afraid. I will help you.’”
Isaiah 41:11-13
What astounding promises we have in the Word of God for all who will humble themselves before Him and seek forgiveness and a new life. We hurt ourselves when we try to live independently from Him and trust in our own judgement. Let us be wise and seek the Lord and the wisdom He gives to all who want it.
