This mind phenomenon is very curious and no one wants to talk about it, much less understand it. Indeed, it is a mystery that some try to look into and discover how it can be prevented and overcome. It is a profound mystery and is different for each person who experiences this mind state. It is a framework of the working of the mind which results in uncharacteristic thought processes and behaviour. The mind sets out on a journey that leads the person into uncharacteristic situations and causes the sufferer a lot of distress. It is not always the result of mind illness but appears in a persons life when they are suffering trauma. It is a kind of strategy that the mind uses to release the sufferer from the pain of reality.
Psychosis can include paranoia, delusions and hallucinations and some suffer all these. It can be a frightening experience, but experience is a good teacher and we learn to take a step back from the experience and look into the meaning. It is a great blessing to step back with insight (wisdom) for it helps us to understand what is reality and what is the psychosis. It gives us good skills in analysing and gaining insight into why we suffer in this way.
The mind invents another reality or a series of realities as it seeks to make sense of the trouble and trauma that the person has experienced. It can cause delusions, especially of grandeur, and hallucinations. These states of mind can be distressing as paranoia causes the mind to think that other people are opposing the person and concocts realities that are false. It is good to have insight into this situation as it helps to counteract the pain and distress that it causes.
Often we suffer hearing voices that are not really there. The voices can interact with the sufferer and are a way that the mind uses to make sense of reality. This is triggered by oppression and stress from the outside world. The voices can be people that you know and it is interesting to analyse them and try to make sense of what you are experiencing. It is good to have someone you can talk to at this point as they can help you sort out the various thought processes, but often there is no one around that you can trust or who understands the phenomenon and can help you.
Drugs are not the answer, although there are some treatments that can help the psychosis stay away. It is better to talk and find someone who will understand and that you are not “mad!”
Anyone can suffer this and it is a common way the mind uses to recover from trauma. The trauma can be the result of stress, anxiety and unresolved conflicts. There is a strong link between childhood abuse and the onset of psychosis. It’s as if the mind is trying to sort out the difficulty and deal with the plethora of guilt and shame that the person has suffered in their past life. It is also triggered by abuse in the life of the adult person and the mind tries to make sense of the experiences and come to terms with what is happening.
It’s as if the mind has overloaded and takes a break from the reality to try to recover. The voices help the sufferer to come to terms with their experiences and sort out problems. They can be distressing but facing them will help us to overcome them.
We can ask God for insight that we might understand what is happening in our mind so that we can identify the thought processes and overcome them. No one knows why psychosis comes or goes but we don’t need to be afraid of it if we subjugate it all to the Lord who understands everything. We can help ourselves by keeping organised and accountable to yourself for the activities of the day.
“But if any of you lacks wisdom, let him ask of God, who gives to all liberally and without reproach, and it will be given to him.”
James 1:5
“Without faith it is impossible to be well pleasing to him, for he who comes to God must believe that he exists, and that he is a rewarder of those who seek him.”
Hebrews 11:6
God is the ultimate reality and He knows the working of our mind and can make us wise in dealing with our thoughts and feelings. He is all wise and will lead those who believe in Him in every right way. Maybe reading this makes you feel afraid, but don’t be for God is able to make us victorious. I do have depression some days, but so does everyone. I have days I think too highly of myself, just like everyone else, but now I am myself and I fight. God is able to help us fight both sides of the same coin and keep us secure to the end. Be encouraged that our loving God is able. Psychosis can be beaten and reality restored.
One response to “Psychosis”
Thank you for this, Shirley. It is important for those who have not experienced psychosis to listen and learn from those who have. God has blessed you with so much wisdom. Rebecca xx
